The CHANCE Foundation (CHANCE®) is a non-profit organization formed to help at-risk youth (primarily residing in inner-city and rural areas) realize their full potential through a post-secondary education.

The path to good fortune can often be found at the intersection of Opportunity and Preparation. Yet, for a great number of our minority youth, the socioeconomic conditions in which they are raised leave them far from those golden-paved roads and without the divining needle of a compass to help point the way. CHANCE® will act as their guide, offering relevant and cost-effective computer-based educational programming and curricula to students, parents and schools. http://www.bettermychance.com/

Mad Hatter Relay and Rabbit Hole Run
    by Sarah Barber

The Mad Hatter prefers to run a relay on his un-birthday.
Get on your Shriner-style fez or your Indy Jones fedora. It’s time for the annual Mad Hatter Relay and Rabbit Hole Run–the only running event in town where a head-covering of your choosing is actually required. To ensure that you don’t take your Race to Robie Creek training too seriously, sponsor Mike Shuman of Shu’s Idaho Running Company stresses, “It’s just fun. It’s absolutely fun.” Race director Jeff Ulmer agrees, adding, “This is a one-of-a-kind event in which anything goes.”

The unique race format involves teams of two people, and each teammate runs a two-mile leg twice through Julia Davis Park, for a total of four miles each. When the baton is passed after the first leg, non-running teammates can compare hats while waiting their turn to run again. Official judges will also be comparing hats, so if speed ain’t your thang, you might still win a prize for sporting a fancy lid. Feel free to enhance your turban or sombrero with the corresponding full-body attire, as costumes are encouraged, too.

For the second year in a row, the Mad Hatter Relay will include a one-mile Rabbit Hole Run so that the single-digit age group can join the fun. Instead of the traditional T-shirt associated with fun runs, all participants will receive beanies to keep their domes warm for the remainder of spring.

Saturday, March 20, 9 a.m., $38 per team, $20 kids run, Julia Davis Park (access road by rose garden), 700 S. Capitol Blvd. Register online at bluecirclesports.com. More information at cityoftreesmarathon.com.
